Let's all try to remember the period where Justin Timberlake decided that he was
going to follow up his forward-thinking 2006 album, "FutureSex/LoveSounds," with
a bunch of movies — a move that resulted in fans essentially begging him to
return to pop. That hue and cry must be at least part of the reason that his two
"20/20 Experience" albums are so full of music. Like the first half of
this diptych, each song on the club-ready album has an outro/interlude
attached to it. Similarly, those extra bits — and many of the songs attached to
them — feel like they could have been trimmed, if not dropped from the album
entirely. The only real difference here is that the lyrics — from the tone-deaf
title of the disco pastiche "Take Back the Night" on down — are slightly more
cringe-inducing, although that might be a side effect of worn-out welcomes than
anything else. - Maura Johnston
